This is for the 3 Weeks for Dreamwidth Transfic Mini-Fest, which is awesome, btw, and worth checking out.
The prompt was, X-Men, any student at the Xavier School. "Everything changes but you." I hope I did it justice.

They tell you that everything will change. The way you look, the way people react to you, the things you can do. People will be afraid, because they don't understand, they say. You just have to be patient and understanding. Jean, smiling gently in that way she has, hands you a stack of pamphlets to give to your family. When Someone You Love Is and your tears blur because it wasn't supposed to be like this. It was hard enough, just being you, unmatching and out-of-joint and avoiding the people in the street who point and laugh or scream or swear, people in the hallway who trip you and steal your books because you're different. Avoiding mirrors because sometimes, at the right angles, you saw her shining back at you but usually it was him and you clenched your jaw and hated. You've always felt like the universe played a nasty trick on you, and this just confirms it. It wasn't bad enough, it wasn't hard enough, you want to demand of someone but you don't know who to ask. Who could give you an answer. You're really crying now, and you realize that Jean's hand is on your back, rubbing. She calls you by her name, your name, without even being told, and she takes your hands and says, “This is who you've always been. Everything changes but you.”
