[personal profile] finch gave me L. If you want a letter, let me know.

I have a lot of songs that start with L. Like, 393. So I don't think I'm going to be able to narrow it down to five, but I'll do my best.

I was going to say that they're in no particular order, but the truth is, they're in alphabetical order. Which is an order. So.

First of all, excuse me while I immediately out myself as a giant dork.

L-Y, Tom Lehrer
I'm pretty sure that early reruns of The Electric Company played a significant part in my love of language, so while this song is both silly and simplistic, it's important enough that it's still in my iTunes. (I also have several Schoolhouse Rock songs.)

La Vie Boheme, from Rent
One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite musicals.

Learn to be Still, the Eagles
This is one of the first songs I ever totally associated with a fandom. Way back when I was watching Babylon 5 for the first time, I really wanted to do a vid for this song, but I lacked the technology. But it was beautiful in my head.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Lebo M
I have three covers on this list. My requirement for a good cover is that you take a song and change it in some fundamental way without losing the spirit of the song itself. The Dixie Chicks' cover of "Landslide" infuriates me, because they didn't DO anything to it. Anyway.

The song itself. One of the things I loved about The Lion King was the music, particularly the African-flavored "Circle of Life." I was thrilled they released a follow-up soundtrack called Rhythm of the Pride Lands that was ALL music like that. This is a gorgeous cover of a beautiful song.

Little Wonders, Rob Thomas
This is one of my favorite songs. I get misty pretty much every time I hear it. (♥ [personal profile] finch)

Long December, Counting Crows
I love the Counting Crows because they USE THEIR WORDS when they write songs. ...and the feeling that it's all a lot of oysters, but no pearls... Also: accordion.

Love in the Library, Jimmy Buffett
A sweet, sappy little song nobody has ever heard of. Unless you're a giant Jimmy Buffett fan. Which I am.

Love Minus Zero/No Limit, Fleetwood Mac
There aren't too many famous people that I respond to with I WOULD HIT THAT ANY TIME AND ANYWHERE but Lindsay Buckingham is one of them. A cover of a Bob Dylan song that just leaves me in a melty puddle of beautiful raspy voice and the guitar work, oh my god the guitar work. Okay, incoherent, I love it, deal.

Love Over Gold, Dire Straits
If the only thing you've heard by Dire Straits is "Money for Nothing," do yourself a favor and find some more.

Lovers in a Dangerous Time, Barenaked Ladies
Here's another cover. They make it totally luscious.
